I really hate the term ‘Failure is not an option’. Of course we inherently know it’s not true, but it sets us up to feel really terrible when we ultimately fail at what we’re trying to accomplish which we undoubtedly will. Not only will we fail, we’ll do it many more times than we’ll succeed and sometimes we’ll do it spectacularly with sparks, then flames followed by lots of smoke!
Our whole life is about failure. From the time we’re born we learn mostly from failure.
We don’t take our first steps without falling. We don’t learn to speak without mumbling. We don’t eat solid foods without choking. We learn from our failures.
I’m proud to say I’m a failure. I’ve pushed the edge of the envelope so many times and ended up flat on my face with my ass showing that at one point I wondered why I even tried at all? Then I remembered something I heard when I was a young boy…”If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not working hard enough”.
That one phrase really stuck with me. I’m not suggesting that I’m always working hard but I can tell you that none of my successes have come on the first shot. I’ve put in my 10,000 hours on everything that I consider to be my strengths and I’d bet you have as well.
If you stepped up to the plate and hit a homerun on your first at bat, I congratulate you!
I also feel really sorry about the way you’re going to feel after your first strikeout.
Embrace failure, don’t run from it. Don’t give it the power to keep you where you are or keep you from doing that thing you want to do.
Go and be a spectacular failure until you’re not.
